Advancing Collaborative Research: MOU Signing between SPRC and Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI)
The Social Policy Resource Centre (SPRC) signed an MOU with the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI), a pioneer think-tank affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Pakistan on January 31, 2025. This collaboration aims to produce research and policy evidence in the areas of International Trade, Regional Economic Integration and on the role of Civilizational narratives in National and Regional Social Development. Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, Director General ISSI, and Dr. Safdar Sohail, Executive Director SPRC signed the MOU, marking formalization of joint research and dissemination efforts.
Ambassador Sohail Mahmood expressed his views on collaboration between research organisations, as a means of building connections that enable interdisciplinary crossovers. He remarked that such initiatives are instrumental in consolidating strengths and knowledge of partner organisations for a more constructive input. Discussing a prospective joint study on Regional Trade Frameworks, he remarked that, intra-regional trade in South Asia is relatively limited due to various reasons be it economic reasons, politics of trade or constrained political relationships. He stressed upon producing fresh research and analysis based on data and evidence on intra-regional trade particularly, India-Pakistan Trade and to better inform public and academic discourse.
Dr. Safdar Sohail endorsing the proposition for a joint study on Regional Trade Frameworks, recommended to organizing a conference on the subject area alongside the way the two sides approach their niche policy subjects. He discussed the potential of ECO and SAARC, to strengthen regional cooperation and economic integration. He remarked that a thorough analysis and evaluation of trade opportunities and challenges, particularly in the context of evolving global trade dynamics, would offer contemporary evidence to support informed policy- making decisions.
The MOU signing concluded with discussion on common areas of interests and exchange of ideas across the research teams of the SPRC and ISSI. It was decided to explore modern and different channels and methods for dissemination of information on intra-regional and forums of regional cooperation for better public awareness.
